SkyTEM survey completed for Dundas Minerals in Australia

Dundas Minerals has completed its SkyTEM airborne electromagnetic survey over the entire 1,106 sq project area in the Southern Albany-Fraser Orogen of Western Austarlia. The company is exploring for nickel-copper-platinum group elements with three target areas having now been chosen for immediate in-fill gravity surveys.

Eskay Mining discovery following SkyTEM Survey

Eskay Mining Discovers Two New Large VMS Systems at its consolidated Eskay Project. The exploration has discovered two new potentially large volcanogenic massive sulphide (“VMS”) systems on its Consolidated Eskay precious metal project in the Golden Triangle, British Columbia, Canada.

Drilling over the next few weeks will target SkyTEM anomalies suspected to be new occurences and extensions of sulphide mineralization promixal to these targets.

SkyTEM survey at Okiep Copper Project for Orion Minerals

Orion Minerals Limited is pleased to announce that the Okiep District SkyTEM helicopter borne geophysical survey has commenced. Importantly, the SkyTEM survey includes the Okiep Copper Project area, located 570km north of Cape Town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, which is currently under option to Orion.

The combined Council for Geosciences (CGS) and Orion field teams have confirmed that the recently announced SkyTEM survey has commenced. The regional survey will cover an area of approximately 1,827 km2, with approximately 1,073 line kms flown at 1km line spacing. Orion’s focussed exploration area of approximately 857km2 will have 6,157 line kms flown at 150m line spacing.

AEM surveys will assist groundwater management in California

The California Department of Water Resources has selected a team of consultants led by Ramboll to conduct airborne electromagnetic surveys in California’s high- and medium-priority groundwater basins. The surveys will provide a standardized statewide dataset which will improve understanding of large-scale aquifer structures and support implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.

Groundwater is a critical source of water for both California farms and communities. The State of California enacted the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act which requires local agencies in high- and medium-priority groundwater basins to develop and implement groundwater sustainability plans.

To assist local agencies as they develop these plans, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) will conduct airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys in California’s high- and medium-priority groundwater basins. The project will generate coarse-grid subsurface maps that provide framework information about large-scale aquifer structure. The AEM data supports the development or refinement of hydrogeologic conceptual models as well as helps to identify possible areas for recharging groundwater.

“Statewide AEM surveys will further DWR’s technical assistance services supporting local communities as they work to manage their groundwater supply to ensure its reliability,” said Steven Springhorn, acting DWR deputy director of statewide groundwater management.

“AEM data will give locals a better understanding of their groundwater basins and will provide a dataset that supports the overall implementation of SGMA and groundwater sustainability agencies’ development of groundwater sustainability plans.”

Taking an MRI of the ground’s subsurface
During an AEM survey, a helicopter tows electronic equipment that transmits radio waves to the ground and measures the response that returns. The process has been compared to taking an MRI of the ground’s subsurface, and the data collected is used to create continuous images that are interpreted for underground geology to a depth of about 1,000 feet.

The surveys are funded by voter-approved Proposition 68, Senate Bill 5, and the General Fund. The AEM project is expected to start this summer and DWR will hold a public webinar in advance to launch the project.

Local team with global knowledge
DWR has selected Ramboll, a consulting engineering group, to lead the team conducting the surveys and interpretating the data. Along with Ramboll, the team consists of GEI, a consulting engineering and environmental firm with five locations in California, and SkyTEM which will provide the AEM field survey.

The helicopter services needed for the AEM Survey are provided by Sinton Helicopters, located in in Paso Robles, California, and Aarhus University from Denmark will provide specialized academic expertise.

Ramboll and SkyTEM have previously conducted similar surveys in California as well as in other countries including Denmark, where the technology has been used to create detailed mapping of the country’s groundwater resources.

Rewarding collaboration
Denmark and California are sharing knowledge through the Danish Water Technology Alliance (WTA) where Ramboll and SkyTEM are participating. The 9th of March, Denmark and California took the next joint step on the way toward a more resilient, sustainable, and efficient water sector by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding.

SkyTEM finding drinking water with Airbus helicopters

30% of drinking water (fresh non-salty water) remains under the ground, while 68% is in a frozen state and only 2% is available as surface water. As our available fresh water becomes increasingly scarce and valuable, many are calling groundwater the new oil. Helicopters can help to find it.

Field Technician for Airborne Geophysical Surveys – USA and Canada

SkyTEM Geotechnical Engineering Staff on Survey

SkyTEM is seeking an eager-to-travel field worker to operate equipment conducting geophysical surveys of the subsurface from a helicopter platform. The projects are mainly taking place in the Americas, but also possibly worldwide. Work is typically in-field, project based for a number of weeks at a time, with time in the workshop or on leave when not engaged in the field. SkyTEM has worked on all seven continents, so the work conditions in the field vary.

There is no specific educational background requirement, but the candidate must have excellent technical knowledge.  Preference to people with electronics, geophysics, or geoscience field background.  The employee will undergo internal training to acquire the specific technical skills to do the job, which include being able to:

  • Undertake logistical reconnaissance and selection of landing locations in the field
  • Communicating instructions to the helicopter pilot regarding survey parameters
  • Assembling the SkyTEM system and operating the instruments correctly as per training and standard operating procedures
  • Undertake testing and accurately recording results prior to data collection
  • Master the operation of the SkyTEM system and troubleshoot faults according to instruction manuals or in direct contact with a remote technician
  • Undertake field quality control of collected data in proprietary software
  • Understand, adhere to and implement SkyTEM’s HSE system
  • Have strong IT competencies at a level above an ordinary PC user.

Personal qualifications

  • As a minimum the employee must master English in writing and speaking at an average level – other languages such as French, Spanish or Portuguese will be an advantage
  • Be well-organised and service-oriented
  • Have interpersonal skills and a constructive and proactive approach to troubleshooting
  • Be able to work under relatively harsh conditions and in isolated areas
  • Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have a valid passport and be willing to travel
  • Have first aid / CPR course and no criminal record
  • Dual Canadian / USA citizenship is an advantage

Tasks

  • Conduct yourself in a manner which enhances the reputation of SkyTEM and yourself
  • Conduct and manage surveys in the field according to procedures and schedule
  • Update job specific HSE plans, risk assessments and other security-related procedures
  • Daily reporting to Project and Field Manager regarding progress and data quality

  • Participate in debriefing, safety and other meetings at the headquarters

SkyTEM data contributes towards the first geological map in an Aboriginal language

The recently released palaeovalley map of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia, has been translated into Pitjantjatjara by the Iwiri Aboriginal Corporation. This broadscale map serves as a guide for more detailed future hydrogeological investigation to unlock additional groundwater resources.”
